Shirley J. (Heaton) Simpson, 94, of New Hartford, passed away at Abraham House in Rome on December 16, 2020 into the arms of the Lord.
She was born March 18, 1926, in Utica, the daughter of the late Charles A. Heaton, Jr. and Catherine Sayles Heaton. She attended St. Agnes Elementary School and was a graduate of Thomas R. Proctor High School, Class of 1944. On September 18, 1948, at St. Francis deSales Church, Utica, Shirley married John G. Simpson, Sr. John passed away on April 22, 2012 after 63 wonderful years of marriage. Shirley worked at Hathaway Bakery and Savage Arms in the 1940s, and later worked at Sears & Roebuck when her kids were older. Shirley helped raise four generations of children starting with her four younger siblings, when she was only 13, due to her mother's untimely passing. She continued to take care of her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren.
Shirley enjoyed reading, doing word searches, and never missed a New York Yankees or Syracuse Basketball game. Most of all, she loved spending time with her family.
She is survived by her four children, John (Carol) Simpson, Jr. of New York Mills, Richard (Lynn) Simpson, Sr. of Utica, Robert (Jan) Simpson and Mary Ellen (Roy) Schultz of New Hartford; eleven grandchildren, William (Corinna) Simpson, Richard Simpson, Jr., Erica Simpson, Reid Simpson, Paige Simpson, Nicole (Kevin) McKenna, Stephen (Katie) Simpson, Scott (Shea) Simpson, Ryan (Allison) Schultz, Ashley (Matthew) Brooks, and Rachel Schultz; four great grandchildren, Andrew McKenna, Nolan McKenna, Emily Simpson, Abigail Simpson; and was eagerly looking forward to the arrival of Ryan and Allison's baby in May. She is also survived by her in-laws, Catherine Heaton and Robert Simpson; special cousin, Marilyn Collea Miner; along with special friends, Vincent and Lucille Chapman and Jerome Cooley; and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her siblings, Charles and Elaine Heaton, Thomas and Elizabeth Heaton, Richard Heaton Sr., and Catherine Draper; and her in-laws, Edward and Mary (Nellie) Simpson, Edward and Elizabeth Simpson, and Mary Therese Simpson.
Relatives and friends are invited to her Mass of Christian Burial on Saturday (tomorrow) at 12 noon at Our Lady of Lourdes Church, Utica. Private interment will be in Calvary Cemetery. Please follow CDC and NYS guidelines with social distancing and face masks and please arrive at church a little early to sign contact tracing forms.
