Shirley A. Janicke

Shirley A. Janicke “Birdie” was born on June 28, 1945, in Utica, NY. She passed away on December 30, 2023, at the age of 78 after a brief illness.

Shirley is survived by her three brothers, Peter, Chuck and Tommy; and two sisters, Diane Kelly and Debbie Huddleston; and countless nieces and nephews.

Shirley was predeceased by her parents, Louis and Eileen Janicke; two nieces, Lisa Janicke and Michelle Kelly; and two brothers in-law, Robert Kelly and Bob Huddleston.

Shirley was educated in the Utica City School District. She worked many years at her father’s bar “The Old Shanty” as well as the Historic Olbiston Apartments and The Grand Nursing Facility. Shirley also volunteered for many years for the Boilermaker Road Race doing security.

Shirley was a beloved daughter, sister, aunt, and friend. Shirley’s hobbies included playing bingo, scratch off tickets and playing her favorite numbers for the Lotto that were significant to her and held meaning. Shirley also held dear to her heart the many conversations and time spent with a special friend, Gordon Schindler.

Shirley would give anyone the shirt off her back and always had stories to tell. Shirley will be truly missed but her memories will live on forever.

The family would like to thank Shirley’s niece, Lyn Geigel for the care and compassion she has given and shown to Shirley before, during and after Shirley’s passing. Also, a special thank you to the 3rd and 8th floor at the Wynn Hospital as well as Dr. Wassel who cared for Shirley during this difficult time.

A private service will be held at the Mark C. Bentz Funeral Service, Inc., New Hartford, with burial at Calvary Cemetery at the convenience of the family.
