Elsie (Liz) Kochem

Elsie (Liz) Kochem, 89, of Hamilton, passed away Monday, March 23, 2009 at Community Memorial Hospital, Hamilton. She was born March 13, 1920, in Darmstadt, Germany, the daughter of the late August and Margaret Schafer Vespermann. At a young age, along with her family, she came to the United States, settling in Schenectady. She attended school and business school in Schenectady. On November 9, 1946, in Schenectady, she married Thomas C. Kochem. He passed away December 22, 1983. Mrs. Kochem was employed with General Electric in Schenectady and was later employed with the Schenectady Credit Bureau for many years, retiring in 1980. Since residing in Hamilton, she attended the First Baptist Church, was a member of the Senior Citizens Bowling League and was a volunteer with the Hamilton Public Library and the Hamilton Food Pantry. Elsie was a devoted daughter and a loving wife, mother and grandmother.. She enjoyed walking, riding her bicycle and was an avid reader. She is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Robert and Christine Kochem of Belmont, MA and Dennis and Barbara Kochem of Hamilton; five grandchildren and their spouses, Dennis, Jr. and Amy Kochem of New Woodstock, Cheryl and Ben Carter of Vienna, VA, Jeoffrey Kochem of State College, PA, Thomas Kochem of Watertown, MA and Gardner Kochem of Hamilton; and a very special friend, that was of great assistance to Elsie, Gwen Benedict. She was predeceased by her twin sister, Marie Vespermann Weaver in 1984. Funeral services were held at the convenience of the family at the Kloster-Northrop & Bentz Funeral Home, Waterville, where Pastor Joseph Glaze officiated. Interment took place in St. Joseph's Cemetery, Schenectady.
