Esther Doris Mitkoff, of Utica, New York, West Palm Beach, Florida, and Latham, New York, passed away Wednesday, November 24, 2021, at St. Peter's Hospital in Albany, New York. She was born August 15, 1935, in Utica, New York, the daughter of the late Moe Jay and Anna Smith Silverman.
She received her education in the Utica schools and was a graduate of Utica Free Academy, State Teachers College at Buffalo, and graduate work at SUNY Cortland.
She worked as an art teacher in the Adirondack Central School system, Boonville, New York and Utica Public School System (Utica Free Academy, Conklin, and Roosevelt School), Utica, New York.
Esther Doris Mitkoff married Donald Mitkoff on June 28, 1959. They were happily married for 56 years.
Mrs. Mitkoff was a former member of the House of Jacob, Temple Beth-El, Temple Emanu-El, Hadassah, Jewish Community Center, Council of Jewish Women, Charles T. Sitrin Home Guild, New York State Art Teachers Association, and Buffalo State College Alumni Association.
She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Michele and Charles August, of Latham, New York; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Dr. Nathan Mitkoff and Melissa Mitkoff, of Guilderland, New York and Dr. Murray Mitkoff of Latham, New York; grandchildren, Allison and Joshua August and Jacob, Benjamin, and David Mitkoff; a brother and sister-in-law, Charles and Janet Silverman, Palm Beach Gardens, Florida; and two sisters-in-law, Joan and Joel Seif, New Hartford, New York and Lois Silverman, Pennsylvania; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded by her husband, Donald; two brothers, Theodore Silverman, New Hartford, New York, and Michael Silverman, New Hartford, New York; and two sisters-in-law, Helene Shapiro, Phoenix, Arizona, and Anita Gerowitz, New York.
The funeral will be on Sunday, November 28 at 11 a.m. at Temple Emanu-El, 2710 Genesee Street, Utica, New York, with Rabbi Gustavo Geier officiating. The Temple requests anyone attending services be vaccinated and wear a face mask. Interment will be in the House of Jacob Cemetery, Whitesboro, New York.
