On Wednesday, November 29th, 2017, Sophie B. (Grundowski) Gryska reunited with her husband, Mark, one day after their 71st wedding anniversary in heaven. She was 92. Sophie was born June 9, 1925 in Wilkes Barre, PA, to polish immigrants. It was a tough childhood, as the depression raged, but a childhood full of love and simple pleasures. She often recounted the stories of her youth, her coal-miner father, her six brothers and sister, and her mother, who made everything from scratch. They all worked to support the family as best as they could, and then support our country when the war came. While her five eligible brothers went off to fight, Sophie also joined the war effort, helping to support her parents as her father battled black lung. When the boys came home, they befriended a fellow lover of cold beer, and introduced him to their sister. On November 28th, 1946, a brisk and bright Thanksgiving morning, Sophie married Mark A. Gryska, with all but one brother, lost in the war, by their side. They spent their first married years in Vosberg, PA on the banks on the Susquahanna, and her brothers were often at Sophie and Mark's table, eating the fish they had just caught, and feasting on the crabs and clams the boys brought. After the birth of their second daughter, Sophie and Mark relocated to New Hartford in 1953. While Mark was photographing the News for WKTV, she was busy making a home as their family grew to include two sons. She is survived by her children, Marcia Corsi of New Hartford, Mark (Ellen Hirschberg) Gryska of North Hampton, MA and Carl (Gerardo) Gryska of Los Angeles, CA; eight grandchildren, Brigitte (Tim) Page of Fayetteville, Catherine (Keith Johnson) McGrath of Rochester, Darien (Enrique) Molina of Taberg, Erin (Rob Pawluk) McGrath of Little Falls, Heather (Ben Patterson) Gallant of Rochester, Aaron Gallant of Rochester, Oriana Hirschberg of Columbus, OH and Asher Gryska of Brooklyn; and her son-in-law, Doug Gallant of Brighton. Sophie loved her grandchildren, but had a special bond with her five great grandchildren, Dylan and Claire Shepard, Enrique and Marcus Molina and Gabriel Pawluk. She was predeceased by her husband, Mark; and daughter, Laura Gallant. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Monday at 12 noon at St. John the Evangelist Church, New Hartford. Entombment will follow in Calvary Cemetery Mausoleum. There are no calling hours. The family would like to thank the fourth floor staff of the Utica Rehabilitation & Nursing center, especially Sandy, Heidi, Christina and Mary, for all their wonderful care. Donations in memory of Sophie may be made to Hospice & Palliative Care, Inc. or the Alzheimer's Association of CNY. Arrangements are with the Bentz Funeral Service, Inc., New Hartford.
