It is with great sadness to announce the passing of our mother, grandmother, great grandmother and devoted friend, Ruth M. Paternoster on March 31, 2011. She is now in the arms of angels to spend eternal life with the Lord in Heaven. Ruth was born March 17, 1924, in Schenectady, the daughter of the late Walter and Sara Baker Borst and was the sister of the late Walter, Francis and Ida. She attended Schenectady schools before venturing out in the working world to the Mohawk Valley, where she met her beloved husband, the late S. Anthony Paternoster, who passed away in 2003. They resided in Utica and started their family here. She loved her children with great devotion which carried through to her six grandchildren and three great grandchildren, whom are forever in her heart. Ruth had a big smile and an outgoing personality that made those around her feel so much joy. Everyone loved her. Ruth loved to sew, knit, cook and was a terrific baker of pies, cakes and cookies. Her famous baked lasagna was second to none. She also enjoyed watching a good baseball or football game and attending games at Murnane Field and Syracuse University. Ruth dedicated her life to the care of her family and spent many enjoyable hours playing with her grandchildren. She is survived by four children, Barbara Paternoster of Niskayuna, Anthony S. Paternoster of Schenectady, LouAnn Spatola of Utica and Donna (Tony) Caltagirone of New Hartford; Carol Ferguson of Niskayuna, who was like a daughter to her; her grandchildren, Courtney (Chad) Perry of Raleigh, NC, Marc (Stephanie) Spatola of Whitesboro, Anthony Paternoster of Rochester and Zachary, Katelyn and Matthew Caltagirone of New Hartford; her great grandchildren, Charisma and Catrina Perry and Kingston S. Spatola; her extended family, Kathy Davies of Schenectady and Kris Mahar of Utica; nieces and nephews; and her dog, Alfredo and kitty cat, Buffy. The family extends many thanks to the fine people of the Presbyterian Home for Central NY with a special thank you to Ferida and the entire staff of the Willow Unit for their wonderful care. The funeral will be Monday at 9:15 from the Bentz & Amodio Funeral Service, Inc., 470 French Rd., Utica/New Hartford and 10 from Our Lady of Lourdes Church, where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated. Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery. Calling hours are Sunday afternoon from 2-5.
