Thelma G. Caruso, 85, of Utica, passed away unexpectedly on Thursday, November 12, 2009 at Faxton-St. Luke's Healthcare Center, with her loving family by her side. She was born January 29, 1924, in Burgaw, NC, the daughter of the late James and Ida Thigpen Jordan and received her education there. On March 13, 1943, in Wilmington, NC, she married Napoleon F. (Nippy) Caruso, a loving union of 56 years. He passed away February 24, 1999. For 18 years, Mrs. Caruso was a cashier at Grand Union in Utica, retiring in 1986. She was a parishioner of St. Mary of Mt. Carmel/Blessed Sacrament Church. Thelma was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother and was a loving homemaker. She loved flowers and had a passion for cooking who brought a little flare of southern cooking to her extended Italian family in Utica. She is survived by two daughters and a son-in-law, Ida (Mickey) and Frank Patterson of Panama and Patricia Murphy of Deerfield; two sons and daughters-in-law, Joseph and Rosemary Caruso of Utica and Anthony and Olga Caruso of Deerfield; ten grandchildren and their spouses, Frank and Debbie Patterson, Patricia and Adam Prudencio, Michael and Heather Entwistle, John Murphy, Brian Murphy, Anthony Caruso, Daniel Caruso, Deborah Caruso-Fuller, Gina Caruso and Kelly and Andy Sink; eight great grandchildren, Elizabeth, Patrick, Anthony, Cameron, Emily, Brady, Caleb and Chloe; two sisters-in-law, Carmella Caruso of Frankfort and Connie Caruso of Utica; and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a daughter, Janice Caruso; a grandson, David Entwistle; three brothers and six sisters. The funeral will be Tuesday at 9 am from the Bentz & Amodio Funeral Service, Inc., 470 French Rd., Utica/New Hartford and 10 am from St. Mary of Mt. Carmel/Blessed Sacrament Church, where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated. Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery. Calling hours are Monday evening, 4-7.
