John J. (Jack) Dooley, Sr., Deputy Chief UFD, Retired, 72, of New Hartford, passed away Saturday, October 11, 2008 at St. Elizabeth Medical Center, surrounded by his loving family. He was born June 24, 1936, in Utica, the son of the late Patrick W. and Julia Jennings Dooley and received his education at St. Francis deSales. On August 25, 1956, at St. Mary of Mt. Carmel Church, Utica, he married Shirley A. Tomaino. Jack worked for several local contractors for a number of years, prior to his appointment to the Utica Fire Department. He was promoted to Lieutenant in December of 1976, to Captain in February of 1982 and Deputy Chief in July of 1985. During his tenure with the department, he received many accommodations and awards, including "Firefighter of the Year" in 1976 and "Officer of the Year" in 1978. He retired in 1989 with over 30 years of service. Mr. Dooley was a member of the William E. Burke Council #189 Knights of Columbus and it's 4th Degree Assembly, the Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie #97, the B.P.O.E. #33, the Retired Police & Firefighters Association and was a parishioner of the Church of Our Lady of Lourdes. Jack was a devoted husband, father and grandfather with a melancholy personality. He enjoyed golfing and spending time on his computer. He is survived by his loving wife of 52 years, Shirley; two daughters and sons-in-law, Patricia and Joseph Panella of Marcy and Karen and Brion Salatino of LaFayette; a son and daughter-in-law, John J., Jr. and Heidi Dooley of New Hartford; eight grandchildren, Joseph Peter Panella, Daniel John Panella, Brion Salatino, Maria Salatino, Sarah Salatino, Patrick Dooley, Kevin Dooley and Ciara Dooley; a sister and brother-in-law, Marilyn and Scott Richards of New York Mills; a brother, William Dooley and Cindy Kelly of Utica; his in-laws, Marie Dooley of Whitesboro, Thomas Dolan of Long Island, Angela Shaw, Lillian Hajec, Jean Tomaino, Bernice and Al Stalker and Richard and Marion Tomaino, all of Utica; and many nieces, nephews and cherished friends. He was predeceased by two sisters, Agnes Patricia Dolan and Mary Dooley; and a brother Michael Dooley. The funeral will be Wednesday morning at 8:30 from the Bentz & Amodio Funeral Service, Inc., 470 French Rd., Utica/New Hartford and 9:30 from the Church of Our Lady of Lourdes, Utica, where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated. Interment will be in St. Agnes Cemetery, Utica. Calling hours are Tuesday evening from 4-8.
