Dr. William Jay Goodman, 78, of Corning, New York passed away January 1, 2021 at his home. Bill was born on September 14, 1942 to Faye (Lison) and Robert Goodman in Utica, New York.

The eldest of three sons, Bill graduated from Utica Free Academy, class of 1960. He attended Hamilton College where he graduated in 1964 with a degree in Classical Languages. He earned his medical degree at SUNY Upstate Medical Center in Syracuse. Bill moved to San Diego in 1971 for his psychiatric residency at the University of California San Diego. In 1983 he returned to Utica to continue to practice Psychiatry. His psychiatric career included both private practice as well as working for the New York State and County Correctional Systems. His work within the prison system intensified his pursuit of social and racial equality. He was an unabashed and passionate advocate of liberal ideals.

Bill was a brilliant, complex and complicated man. He had a great sense of humor and a quick wit. He was a voracious reader, writer and philosophical conversationalist. In his retirement, he enjoyed travel, in particular to Italy.

Bill enjoyed tennis and basketball. He spent many mornings up into his 70's shooting baskets at the local YMCA or the nearest playground. He also enjoyed his morning coffee chats with his friends in Corning.

Bill leaves behind four children and their spouses, Jennifer Margolis- Husted and Eve Margolis, both of Austin, Texas, and Rachel Duffy and Stephen Goodman both of Baltimore, Maryland. In addition, are his six grandchildren, Eli and Julia Husted, Rebecca and Jacob Kukyendall, and Abigail and Jeremiah Duffy. In his later years, Bill was overjoyed to be able to spend time with Stephen and his wife Annie Chau, as well as, Rachel, her husband Jerrel and his two youngest grandchildren. Bill is also survived by his brother, Herb Lison; and beloved cousins and friends, Nancy and David Gersh, Frank and Patti Penski, Bob Penski, Judy Penski, Marsha Wilson, George and Beth Honadle, Dennis and Marilyn Abbey, Connie Sargent, Svetlana Baldwin and many others. He was predeceased by his adored grandfather, Louis Lison; his parents; and his brother, Mitchell Goodman.

Due to the ongoing pandemic, burial services will be held privately at Temple Emanu-El Cemetery, New Hartford, New York, with a memorial service planned for a later date. The burial will be live streamed at on Friday, January 8th at 1pm EST.

Having known Bill for only a short time, I would like to extend my sympathies to his family and friends. I am very thankful to have had the opportunity to have had a few very insightful and interesting conversations with Bill.

What a wonderful tribute. He was indeed my childhood companion and my lifelong friend . I will miss him.
