Marion J. Smith, 85, of Utica, passed away Sunday, December 4, 2016 at her daughter Karen's home, with her family by her side. Born October 10, 1931, in Utica, she was the daughter of the late Eugene and Marion Saunders Vaeth. Marion was a graduate of New Hartford High School, Utica Psychiatric Center School of Nursing and received her Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing, Cum Laude from Syracuse University School of Nursing. Mrs. Smith later received her Certification in Enterostomal Therapy Nursing from Roswell Park Memorial Institute. Mrs. Smith was employed by Children's Hospital & Rehabilitation Center, rising to the position of head nurse. She left that position to work as an Enterostomal Therapy Nurse at St. Elizabeth Hospital and concurrently worked as a clinical instructor at The Faxton Hospital. She later returned to St. Elizabeth Hospital and worked as an Ostomy Nurse Specialist and Enterostomal Therapy Nurse, retiring in 1987. She was a member of the National Nursing Honor Society, both American and NYS Nurses Associations, International Association for Enterostomal Therapy, both the Syracuse University and St. Elizabeth Schools of Nursing Alumni Associations, St. Elizabeth Hospital Development Council, United Ostomy Association, American Cancer Society, Greater Utica Annual Health Fair Committee, St. Regis Home Care Board of Directors and served on many St. Elizabeth Hospital Committees. Mrs. Smith was most proud of her many accomplishments, including her biography printed in "Who's Who in American Nursing", wrote and illustrated an Enterostomal manual, setup the first outpatient clinic within a five county-50 mile area, named and wrote many articles for "The Community Health Line" magazine at St. Elizabeth, designed the St. Elizabeth Hospital logo and presented a Post Documentary on Nutrition at the International Association for Enterostomal Therapy. She was predeceased by her husband, Thomas J. Smith on December 28, 1989; her granddaughter, Monika Stern; and her daughter-in-law, Donna Stern. Surviving are five children and their spouses, Marcella and Louis Lewis of Whitesboro, Karen and Joe Bumbolo of Utica, Joseph and Deborah Stern of PA, Paul Stern of Sauquoit and Stephen and Jeanine Stern of CT; 18 grandchildren and six great grandchildren. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday at 9:30 am at Our Lady of Lourdes Church, Utica. Interment will be in Mt. Olivet Cemetery, Whitesboro. Calling hours will be Thursday from 2-4 pm at the Bentz Funeral Service, Inc., 13 Oxford Road, New Hartford. Due to family allergies, please omit floral offerings.
