Merwin S."Merv" Greene, passed away peacefully on Sunday, September 20, 2015 in the care of Hospice at the Delray Medical Center in Delray Beach, FL. Merwin was born on July 17, 1924 in Utica, NY to Rose (Klein) and Harry Greene. He was the youngest of three siblings. Following graduation from Utica Free Academy High School, Merwin attended St. Lawrence University for one year before enlisting in the military to serve our country in World War II. Merwin was a member of the 84th Army Infantry Division in Europe and served from 1942 to 1945 when he was honorably discharged. While serving in combat, Merwin was wounded on two separate occasions with shrapnel. The second time he was hit was during the Battle of the Bulge. He was awarded two Purple Hearts as a result of his injuries, as well as the European Service Medal with 3 Combat Stars. Upon returning home from the war, Merwin re-entered college at Syracuse University under the GI Bill where he graduated cum laude with a major in accounting. He subsequently passed his CPA exam on his initial attempt. Shortly thereafter he moved to Gloversville, NY where he was married to Helene Sussman and accepted a position with the George J. Dorfman & Company CPA firm. Throughout the years he was promoted to junior partner and eventually to senior partner in the firm, remaining in that position for many years before retirement. While living in Gloversville, Merwin became the proud father of his three sons, Warren, Michael, and David. He was a member of several organizations including the Eccentric and Elks Clubs. In 1993, Merwin married Rheba Izenberg to whom he was happily married until his recent passing. They shared their time living between Albany, NY and Delray Beach, FL. Merwin had a lifelong love of his Jewish heritage and faith. His commitment was exemplified by his longstanding affiliation with the Knesseth Israel Synagogue in Gloversville. He served as the president of the synagogue from 1959 to 1960, and as co-president from 1986 to 1988. He also served as treasurer for many years, and volunteered his services for decades on financial and budgetary matters. In his spare time, Merwin was a fan of MLB and the NFL, and supported the NY teams. He was also a fan of all athletic teams at Syracuse University. Merwin loved to play "games of chance" such as craps, poker, and blackjack and felt right at home in any casino. He was also a fan of the Saratoga Racetrack. Merwin's first love, however, was his family. He is survived by his wife, Rheba Izenberg Greene and his beloved sister, Rhealu Greene. He is also survived by his sons, Warren (Jeanne), Michael (Denise) and David; and step-daughter, Janet (Carl)Trichilo. Merwin's grandchildren held a very special place in his heart - Stephen, Jacob (Mackensie), Zachary and Michael. He was predeceased by his loving sister, Ruth Sitrin and her husband Louis. Graveside funeral services, with military honors, will be held Thursday, September 24, 2015 at 2:00 pm at Tifereth Zvi Cemetery, Wood Road, Whitesboro, NY. Arrangements are with the Bentz Funeral Service, Inc., New Hartford, NY.
