William E. Fessenden, 92, of Waterville, passed away Thursday, January 15, 2009 at the Harding Nursing Home. He was born August 21, 1916, in Winston, CT, the son of the late Charles and Rosemary McCardle Fessenden. He was educated in Pittsfield, MA schools and received his Bachelor's degree in Engineering from R.P.I., over a 10 year period by attending college nights. On June 20, 1942, in Pittsfield, MA, he married Mildred M. Briggs, a loving union of over 60 years. Mrs. Fessenden passed away May 22, 2003. For over 30 years, Mr. Fessenden was an Engineer at General Electric in Utica, retiring in 1985. He was a member of St. Bernard's Church, Waterville and the Quarter Century Club at General Electric. Mr. Fessenden, at one time served on the Village of Waterville Board, the Waterville Zoning Board and the Board of Directors for the Waterville Area Volunteer Ambulance Corps. William was a very loving husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather and was a golf enthusiast. He is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Martha R. and Marvin F. Smith of Waterville; two granddaughters and their spouses, Melissa and Ken Karpovich and their children, Amanda and Ryan, all of Greene and Michelle and Steve Selden of New Hartford; a sister, Sr. Mary Grace (Claire) Fessenden, OSF of FL; and two nieces. He was predeceased by a son, William E. Fessenden, Jr. and a brother, Charles Fessenden. The funeral will be Sunday at 4 pm at the Kloster-Northrop & Bentz Funeral Home, 210 E. Main St., Waterville. Calling hours are Sunday from 2-4, prior to the service.
