Helmut "Hal" Lobenstein, 85, of New Hartford, passed away Saturday, July 9, 2016 at the Siegenthaler Center, with his family by his side. Born November 8, 1930 in Hanover, Germany. Hal immigrated from Germany in 1941 with his parents, Hugo and Anne Lobenstein to escape Nazi Germany. As they rebuilt, he learned a new language, excelled in school, and became an aerospace engineer, after graduating from City College in New York City. He was a proud US Army veteran of the Korean War. In 1956, he came to Utica, where he worked for General Electric for 35 years. He developed technology that is still used today. Some in everyday use, and some that is used to protect our country. Most of it was top secret, so we still don't really know all the crazy things he invented!!! He was a kind, gentle soul who rarely showed anger. A loving, devoted, and caring husband to his wife, Myrna Lobenstein for 51 years; an incredibly supportive father and guide to his children, Lisa Schacher and David Lobenstein; terrific father-in-law to Jeff and Leah; and a wonderful grandfather to Maya, Ava, Aidan and Silas; as well as a loving uncle to his nieces and nephews. He was a member and Board member of Temple Beth El and was a member of the Nights of Pythias and the GE ELFUNS. Hal was also a member of the Train Collectors Association and was an avid train collector, a passion he shared with his grandchildren. The funeral will be Sunday (today) at 2 pm at Temple Beth El, 2710 Genesee Street, Utica with Canter Kalman Socolof officiating. Interment will take place in Sharon Gardens Cemetery in Valhalla. Shiva will be observed on Wednesday and Thursday from 4-7 pm at the Lobenstein home, 5 Robin Road, New Hartford. In memory of Mr. Lobenstein, kindly consider Hospice & Palliative Care, Inc. or Temple Beth El. Arrangements are with the Bentz Funeral Service, Inc., New Hartford.
