Carl E. D. Schmidt, Sr., 77, of New Hartford, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family, on Wednesday January 7, 2015 at Faxton-St. Luke's Heathcare. He was born June 17, 1937, in Fond du Lac, WI, the son of the late Dr. Ralph N. Schmidt, Sr. and Wilda E. DeLay Schmidt. Shortly after WW II, he and his family moved to the Utica area when his father was asked by Syracuse University to assist in the formation of Utica College. Carl was educated in Utica Schools and was a graduate of UFA Class of 1955. He also attended Utica College of Syracuse University. Between high school and college, Carl was a professional cowboy and bull rider, specializing in bull and bronc riding. He participated in the Eastern Circuit Rodeo traveling between Lake Luzerne, Enchanted Forest and Florida. Carl began a teaching career in art in 1962, teaching in various school districts throughout the area, including New Hartford Jr. High School and Munson-Williams-Proctor School of Art. Carl was also a Past President of the NYS Art Teachers Association. Carl was also an entrepreneur in the investment property business and opened and managed the first OTB Parlor on Seneca Turnpike in New Hartford. During the mid 70's and 80's, Carl served the citizens of New Hartford as First Ward Councilman. He took great pride in his responsiveness to his constituents concerns. During Carl's tenure he was especially proud of his accomplishments in the establishment of the Donovan Memorial Park in Chadwicks, the current New Hartford Town Highway Facility and also introduced the resolution which led to the consolidation of the New Hartford Village Police Department into the Town of New Hartford Police Department. This resolution also led to the formation of the New Hartford Police Commission. He is survived by his wife, Gail, whom he married on August 24, 2002; his son and daughter-in-law, C. Edward Schmidt, Jr. and Robyn of New Hartford; his daughter and son-in-law, Carolyn and James Dehm of Oswego; his brother and sister-in-law, Ralph N. Schmidt, Jr. and Nancy of Annandale, VA; four grandchildren, Carl "Eddie" Schmidt, III, Kaitlin Schmidt, Christina Dehm and AnneMarie Dehm; his former wife, Barbara Glueck; and several nieces and nephews. The funeral will be Saturday at 2 pm at the Bentz Funeral Service, Inc., 470 French Road, Utica/New Hartford with Rev. Stephen Deckard officiating. Calling hours will be Friday from 4-7 pm. Spring interment will be in East Hill Cemetery, New Hartford.
