Helen M. King, 98, formerly of Oriskany Falls, passed away Wednesday, January 30, 2008 at the Masonic Care Community. She was born May 3, 1909, in Duanesburg, the daughter of the late Francis and Nellie Nowlan Mathews. She was a graduate of Oriskany Falls Union Free School class of 1927 and obtained her Registered Nursing degree from Syracuse University. On October 29, 1934, she married Walter J. King. He passed away April 24, 1979. Mrs. King was the first librarian of the C. W. Clark Memorial Library in Oriskany Falls, which was established in 1938. She worked as the librarian until 1945, when she resigned to help her husband run King's Bakery in Oriskany Falls, which had been founded in 1906 by Walter's father, Clayton T. King. Mr. and Mrs. King also owned and operated King's Liquor Store in Oriskany Falls. In 1938, Mrs. King formally joined the Methodist Episcopal Church, which is now the Oriskany Falls United Methodist Church and was a founding member of the Limestone Ridge Historical Society. She served as historian for the Town of Augusta from 1978-1987 and was the historian for the Village of Oriskany Falls from 1981-1987. She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Arliene and Alfred Chapman of Hudson, FL; a son and daughter-in-law, Robert and Pam King of Oriskany Falls; five grandchildren; Steve (Peggy) Slate, Wesley Slate, Richard (Rhonda) Slate, Kelli (Jeffrey) Excell and Kristi (Corey) Kosmoski; ten great grandchildren; three great great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. She was the last of her generation of three sisters and one brother. A memorial service will be held Saturday at 10 am at the Oriskany Falls United Methodist Church, with Pastor Norma Jean Fellows officiating. Spring interment will be in Hillside Cemetery, Oriskany Falls. There are no calling hours. Arrangements are with the Kloster-Northrop & Bentz Funeral Home, Waterville.
